A New Old Friend

Kids once we were
Many a class was shared
Time has gotten away
Emotions have gone astray
Not remembered would be fair
Mid-crisis I reach out to her

She replies to my call
In happiness I sit with a smile
Remembered me she did
Now much older, I still see the kid
We chat for a while
It’s like not being apart at all

Always a kind and gentle soul she was
Some things never change
I share with her some pain
She listens over and over again
I’m ready to be thought of strange
When describing what the young man does

She sees the real me in the end
Oh what a relief
Despite the distance apart
Always there with an open heart
An attentive ear to hear some grief
I’ve been gifted a new old friend
